“New Teen Titans: Games” Pushed Back

It had been a long time in coming – literally decades in the making – but New Teen Titans: Games had finally been solicited for release. Come November, the wait would be over. New Teen Titans: Games would finally arrive.

Well, not quite. It seems like the decades old project will see one last pushback in release date. It’s bound to be frustrating – especially to the long time fans who have actually waited decades for the project – but it clearly could not be helped.

George Perez himself explains on his Facebook page:

As many of you have already learned, The TEEN TTANS: GAMES graphic novel has been taken off the November release schedule and will be re-solicited. The fault is entirely mine. I’m afraid that a confluence of events, including my worsening eyesight which prompted the ongoing surgical procedures that I’ve already covered here and the bad timing of committing to LEGACIES before I knew that GAMES’ deadlines had been compromised.
With LEGACIES being an ongoing series, as opposed to GAMES being a one-shot, it was determined that the monthly series had to be prioritized since my involvement with that series had already been publicized.

Due to some attendant light sensitivity issues, my ability to stare at a white sheet lit by studio lamps was definitely getting a bit difficult, which is one of the reasons I switched to inking Jerry Ordway for Issue 6. Oddly enough, looking at pages already grayed by pencils was easier on my orbs than starting with a clean white page.

In all likelihood, I will still have several surgeries to get through and, according to my doctor, the prognosis is good. I will be returning to GAMES after I finish LEGACIES and will progress as best as I can in between surgical procedures. After I finish that long, long, long delayed book, I will request to be used primarily as an inker for the following year (with the exception of some covers or pin-ups here and there) until my eyesight is normal (or at least stabilized). After that, I intend to kick some serious comic art butt!

I sincerely apologize to all of you who are now disappointed, yet again with the continuous delays on this decades-old project. I particularly want to apologize to my friend and TITANS cohort Marv Wolfman who’s shown the patience of a saint throughout all this, even during times when I was too overwhelmed to return his calls.

I have about 25 pages left to draw and I’m hoping that, when the book is finally re-solicited (and it will be!) that it will be at least a tiny bit worth the long wait.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

For the uninitiated, “New Teen Titans: Games” is an Original Graphic Novel that had come into being decades ago, back when the Wolfman/Perez run was one of the hottest comics on the market. It’s set back in the continuity of the 80′s years of the Teen Titans comic, which you can tell by the cover alone; the presence of Jericho and pre-Phantasm Danny Chase give a good idea of when it’s supposed to occur. In essence, it’s a lost tale of the Wolfman/Perez era.

For one reason or another, the project was simply never finished and for the longest time it seemed questionable as to whether it would ever see the light of day. George Perez himself once said he was unsure if the project would ever be completed. In recent years, it seems DC has been committed to having this project finally completed and released, hence solicitations.

Obviously, deadlines and George Perez’s own eyesight troubles have combined to push the project back one more time. Understandably, as the mans health must come first. But the good news is that it looks like the wait won’t be for too much longer. He mentions having twenty five pages left to do; a significantly smaller number than what was said last time the graphic novel was mentioned, which makes it clear that a lot of work has been done.

At this point, it’s been decades. So a little longer of a wait is really a drop in the bucket. Besides which, it’s a wait for new George Perez art, which is something that’s always welcome. Better late than never, right?

We’ll have the solicitation for it up once it is re-solicited by DC in the future.
