Teen Titans #89 Review
The second issue in J.T run’s starts off with Dr. Calligan taking Barney to a Science exhibition where we observe Barney’s new ability to absorb knowledge. Back the Titans Tower, the Titans are not in favor of accepting Damian onto the team, leading the young Robin to pick a fight Ravager.
Dick explains that having led an unfortunate life, Damian needs to learn how to trust others. Damian is not keen on being left behind by his protégé, but Dick assures him it is for his own good.
We transition to a brief scene within the ruins of Mohenjo-Daro, where three archeologists, two Indians and one possible American, are at work uncovering renditions of Rakshasas, Demon of Hindu Lore. A young girl appears, the daughter of the two Indian archeologists, by the name of Kirin. An indication of her speech hints her to be the new character previously mentioned by J.T Krul and shows in his exclusive previews.
Back the Tower, while the Titans discuss the new team arrival, Cassie and Damian are monitoring over their computer when they receive alert of the outbreak at the Science exhibition. Before making their depart, Damian overhears Ravager contemplating to tell Cassie to be rid of Damian. He lets his own mind about Ravager be heard but Cassie seizes the moment and insists it is her decision to have him remain on the team.
Raven teleports the team to the exhibition where they find chaos and an excited Barney as the source of disarray. Damian is quick to jump into battle but is flung away by Barney’s new telekinesis-like abilities. After seeing to the civilians, the Titans go into battle. Barney speaks about constantly being bullied; he continues to unleash his powers, proving to be an unstoppable force.
Sneaking up from behind, Raven grabs the boy and teleports him into a different dimension; her ‘safe place’. Raven tries to reason and console the Barney. He shows little resistance and is soothed with Raven’s words. However, when they return back to the other Titans, Damian immediately attacks Barney. Raven urges him to stop but it is too late. Barney is set over the edge once again and releases a powerful whirlwind. He refuses to listen to Raven, claiming her to be just like everyone else. Barney flies out through the roof.
The exhibition is left in ruins and as the Titans pick themselves up, they all turn their disapproving eyes to Damian.
Teen Titans #88 proves to be another decent issue. Though we are only issues into J.T Krul run, I am very pleased with what I have read thus far. I would as well like to add that this issue featured stunning artwork.
People have shown concern over Damian’s overly harsh attitude. I predict this to be all a part of his learning experience. The young Robin is currently treading new waters and thus is instinctively acting more arrogant than the readers are use to. I have a feeling, as he continues to work with the team, he will learn valuable lesson and begin to soften his conceited demeanor towards the Titans.
What Our Members Said;
GhettoMac: “this was a pretty good issue, plus, gettin a one page intro to the new comer, Solstice, was a nice touch. I don’t think Damians attitude was much or a problem, his actions on the other hand. It seemed a bit off, even for him. Mainly with him and Barney. Speakin of which, I’m a bit confused on how Barney’s powers work. At first I thought it was knowledge absorption or telepathy, now it evolved into what, some kinda telekinesis over machines?”
