CW To replace Smallville with…Raven?

With Smallville on it’s final season, CW is looking to develope a follow up series based on Raven herself.

Just how the television Raven will differ from the comic-book version remains to be seen. It seems likely The CW series will downplay or completely disregard her involvement with the Teen Titans, focusing instead on the character’s other-dimensional aspects. Variety characterizes Raven as someone “who uses her skills to fight crime while trying to keep her dark internal elements in check,” which would be in line with the network’s other series, like Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries.

Raven is being written and produced by Diego Gutierrez (V, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) through Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment.

This isn’t the first of CW attempt to find a replacement for Smallville. Birds or Prey lasted for only four months while a Smallville spin-off featuring Aquaman and The Graysons were quick to be dropped as well.

Fans have already voiced their concerns and displeasure to this news.

  1. No offense to Raven but I think this is the most terrrible idea that has ever come up. Beast boy’s life before the teen titans was a major tragedy which would make a better drama story line. Yes raven is a dark character but I don;t think there is anything in her past that they can really be developed and them adding things to make it look appealing won’t work either, Smallville got away with it because they were lucky but this will be about Raven. A teen titan character that who’s life is mostly obscure outside of that group.

    • I agree with that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Raven fan and I’ve loved the comics and the show. However, CW is TERRIBLE when it comes to basing shows off of other characters. Look at Nikita. The movie and the original series were great, especially compared to the terrible version CW has running now.

And as ‘D’ said above me, Raven’s back story isn’t that great. There isn’t even THAT much to go on, where as Garfield has a great back story that gives the audience a lot of information, drama, and laughs.

I’m really hoping this dosen’t go through. I wouldn’t be able to forgive CW if they messed up Raven’s character.

  2. I don’t really think this is going to go anywhere.

If it does though, it’s not a stretch to see why they’d pick her. Keep in mind they’re looking to replace a series starring a borderline emo Clark Kent who whines about having to become Superman but never actually gets around to it. I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the CW is thinking “this character would make for a good teen emo goth high school drama series to replace Smallville”. Which… no. Just no.

Worse case scenario is it happens and they take ten seasons for Raven to get around to being a superhero.

It would be fine, if they don’t cut the Teen Titans completely out, not to mention Beast Boy. If they concentrated on how her mother, Angela, ran away from an abusive home, was manipulated by a cult, raped by trigon, saved by the people of Azerath, and then gave birth to Raven, then that would be fine. If they showed how she was raised in Azerath, never allowed to see her mother, raised by monks, and then when trigon emerges she is forced out of Azerath when it is destroyed, and forced onto Earth, that would be great. She actually has a lot of background to work with, but they need to do it right. What would be awesome is if they concentrated on different storylines from each Titans background, and then at the end came out with a series for the Titans. But they had better be careful, it would be so easy to butcher it. =^..^= ~mew

  4. do you know of or heard of the cast?

    • The series is still in pre-production, thus the decession of the cast will not be made until after they decided to go on with series or not.

  5. “Fans have expressed their displeasure?”

Which fans, the few dozen you know?

I think Raven would be an awesome idea, clearly an original character along an entirely new story arc.

    • You’d be surprised. Ever seen Smallville? Disaster. It would be the same people doing it.

Not to say a train wreck or two isn’t fun to watch.
