Garfield "Beast Boy" Logan

gar_bio_image.pngReal Name: Garfield Logan

First Appearance: Doom Patrol (Vol. One) # 99

History: When he was a toddler, Gar was taken to Upper Lamumba, an African country, by his parents, the biologists Mark and Marie Logan. The parents were there to research genetic codes. While they were there, Gar was bitten by a rabid monkey and infected with the tropical disease Sukutia, which is terminal to humans. In a desperate gambit to save his son, Mark Logan used an untested machine to isolate the common genetic bond between humans and animals. Gar soon recovered, but it was quickly discovered that his skin was permanently tinged green, a side affect of the experiment that saved him.

Years later, when his mother Marie was attacked by a large Black Mamba snake, Gar brought forth his powers for the first time to save his mother, transforming into a mongoose, a known predator of snakes. He found he could change into other forms, but never seemed to get control over them for a time. Years later his parents died in a boating accident. They urged him to change into a bird and fly away and he did. He still believed years later that he could have prevented his parent’s death.

After his parents died, Gar was raised by King Tawaba, friend of the Logans and chief of the local tribe. The tribe’s witch doctor Mobu despised the Logan’s, so much in fact he hired two Americans to kill Gar in exchange for the whereabouts of fabulous treasure. In the end, Mobu was killed when the temple collapsed. Gar, however, was rescued by the Americans, who merely wanted to bring him back to the US to commit crimes for them. Gar, only a young child, hid some of the jewels in an attempt to play a game. The two men thought each other were cheating the other and killed each other. Gar was alone once more. The courts set out to appoint a legal guardian for Gar, but things got no better. Nicholas Galtry was appointed his guardian and he could care less about Gar. In fact, all Galtry wanted was Gar’s inheritance. He soon plotted to kill the boy. Gar soon met the Doom Patrol, taking on the name Beast Boy.

It was during this time that Gar met the Teen Titans for the first time, but was turned away because he needed his guardian’s permission to be a Titan. Galtry did not know Gar was Beast Boy, so Gar was unable to join.

He was forced into similar conditions with the Doom Patrol. They would not allow him to join without his guardian’s permission. Bitter, he stumbled upon a circus owner who hypnotized him to use him as an attraction and a thief. The Teen Titans soon discovered the ruse and battled Gar, putting an end to the criminal activities.

When Gar joined the Doom Patrol, Galtry upped his efforts, hiring several supervillains to kill him and the Doom Patrol. Rita Farr and Steve Dayton were soon married and determined to win custody of Gar in court. It was difficult and the couple nearly lost the case when it was outed that Gar was Beast Boy. Rita changed her form to look like Beast Boy in order to create the illusion that Gar and Beast Boy were two separate people. It worked and Dayton won the case. Gar was free of Galtry’s influence, for the moment.

Gar then joined his parents on the Doom Patrol, serving until General Zahl killed most of the team, including his foster mother Rita Farr. He left home and traveled to Hollywood, gaining a lead role in the show Space Trek 2022. The show flopped for being an unmemorable show and he soon found himself out of a job.

Gar was soon reunited with his former girlfriend Jillian Jackson, but she was quickly kidnapped by a villain named Arsenal. Gar fought the villain, who turned out to be Galtry. Galtry intended to hold Jillian for ransom equal to what he lost when Gar’s guardianship was taken from him. Gar was unable to amass the ransom and was left in an airtight room while Galtry tried to extract the ransom from Jillians father. Gar escaped and fought the villain, shattering his costume and defeating him.

Gar later joined the West Coast version of the Titans, Titans West, but soon changed his name to Changeling and joined the regular team of the New Teen Titans when they were amassed by Raven. Dayton had vowed revenge for his wifes death but on his quest he soon disappeared. Several months after Dayton disappeared; Gar went after him with the help of former Doom Patroler Robotman and the Teen Titans. Gar fought with Madam Rouge, changing into an imaginary beast in the midst of his rage. In his anger, he accidentally killed Madam Rouge when she tried to take them all down with her.

Gar was easily the most insecure Titan, but he formed a friendship with Cyborg. Some time later he fell in love with Terra, a sociopathic girl who became a Titan, but was really a spy working for Deathstroke the Terminator (Slade). She played her part for months, pretending to love him back, but in truth, she hated him. Everything she did around him was an act, but he believed it, even after she betrayed them and told him herself. She tore his heart out and stomped on it, but a part of him fell into denial, not wanting to believe she was that way. He convinced himself that Slade had corrupted her and attacked him over it, but Slade faced him without the costume Gar despised so much. Gar faced the man beneath it. Gar was unable to bring himself to kill Slade, whom dragged the young teen off to a diner. Slade explained everything; how Terra was the way she was long before she met him. She had killed King Tawaba, Gar’s friend and the person who took care of him before. Gar learned that she never loved him in the least. Slade left with some parting words, telling Gar that he was one of the better Titans and that he just needed to stop joking all the time. Slade left, telling Gar that his battles with the titans were only to fulfill a contract against them his son Grant had died without completing. Slade did not fight the Titans again for a long time.

Jillian Jackson returned to Gars life friom boarding school and was able to soothe some of the loneliness he felt over Terra. They resumed their romantic relationship, but not everything was peachy. Some time later Steve Dayton confined himself to a wheelchair, using his mental powers and promethium to create a new Doom Patrol of his own, with him in the role of Chief. He blamed Gar for the original Patrols death and fought the Titans. Eventually, Raven cured Dayton of his dementia and his cancer, ending the conflict. Unfortunately, Gar had fallen behind on his studies and Dayton forbade him from serving on the Titans until his grades improved. Thus began Gar’s leave of absence from the Titans.

Soon after, Gar was captured by the Wildebeest Society during the Titans Hunt. He was rescued by his friends, but the price was high. Cyborg was nearly destroyed, Titans Tower was destroyed, Raven was seemingly dead and Slade was forced to kill his son Jericho in order to stop the society. The Titans attempted to recover afterwards, setting up shop at Dayton Estates. Gar soon found himself corrupted by the Mento helmet, unable to transform into the animals he so loved. He found himself taking the shapes of demonic creatures and liking it. To transform into a regular animal’s had begun to hurt him.

Raven soon returned as a leather clad avatar of Trigon and began planting Trigon Seed’s in heroes. Gar was one of them. He then became a Titans enemy for a time while he was under the influence of Raven and Trigon, but it was broken when the Titans and Phantasm had seemingly destroyed Raven. Gar went to STAR labs, where he hoped to be purged of the evil Trigon Seed that lay inside of him.

Cyborg, having merged with the Technis, returned to his comrades as Evil Raven returned to destroy her good self that lay dormant in Starfire. Tameran was destroyed in the conflict and Gar was soon free of the seed and able to transform into normal animals again. The Titans finally managed to utterly destroy Evil Raven and implant the good Raven in a golden spiritual body. Gar, along with Raven and Minion, decided to stay with Cyborg as his traveling companions.

Frightened by Cyborg’s total embrace of technology, Raven left, with Gar soon following. After the three returned to earth, Cyborg had amassed a ball of debris and planned to make Earth’s moon a new planet for the Technis. Gar and the Titans clashed with the Justice League over how to handle the situation, but they soon united, saving the planet and downloading Cyborgs soul into Minions battle suit, the Omegadrome.

The original five Titans reformed the team and Gar was asked back, but he refused, hoping to find a new purpose and direction in life. He did assist them from time to time, but was not an official member. Gar soon took up his old codename of Beast Boy once more.

He left off to LA, where he met his cousin Matt for the first time and was framed for murder by Gemini, the daughter of Madam Rouge. Gar managed to defeat her and clear his name with the help of Flamebird and soon settled into trying to find work in Hollywood. He found no success there, and ever tried to recreate Titans West at Flamebirds insistence, but none of its members had any real loyalties to the team, and it soon disbanded.

Soon after that, a mysterious android from the future and attacked both the Titans and Young Justice, snapping the neck of Omen and killing Donna Troy, Gar’s longtime teammate on the Titans. After which both teams disbanded, but Cyborg quickly reformed the Titans, bringing Gar back on the team with him.

Gar started to form a bond with Raven over time and resumed his friendship with Cyborg. Soon, the Titans were attacked by a man called the Zookeeper, whom had the same shapeshifting abilities that Gar had. The Zookeeper revealed that he had been there when the experiment that made Gar the way he was took place and had become obsessed with having that power for himself. In his obsession, he was inflicted with a variation of Sukutia which cancelled out Gar’s powers. He wanted to dissect Gar to find out how so he could be normal again.

Cyborg came to the rescue, saving him from Zookeeper, whom went on to battle the rest of the Titans. Gar had a chance to be normal, to lead a normal life, but he chose to reinject himself with the virus, proclaiming that “being normal is overrated”. He then fought Zookeeper throughout LA, finally defeating him out in the bay.

The Titans soon went through Superboy being controlled and soon after that the Infinite Crisis loomed large. Cyborg left for space to help the space team, leaving Gar in charge. Brother Blood attacked soon after, but was defeated by the Titans. During this time Raven kissed Gar for the first time, but they didn’t go anywhere with it at first, as the crisis at hand took precedence. Then, soon after, Bludhaven was destroyed and Gar led the Titans on a rescue mission, letting Robin take over leadership there, as he had more experience in the town.

After Infinite Crisis was settled, Gar led the Titans through most of the year along with Raven. They went in a romantic relationship, but Raven soon discovered a secret and left the Titans. Gar tried to carry on, but things began to fall apart. The Doom Patrol was also asking for his assistance almost every day. So when Robin returned, he relinquished command of the Titans to him, saying goodbye to the near destroyed body of his friend Cyborg whom had returned from space, and left to join the Doom Patrol, where he is currently still a member.

Personality: Beast Boy’s life has been filled with tragedy, and as such has affected his personality. He often hides his insecurities behind humor and flirting with females, when in truth, for the longest time he felt inadequate as a Teen Titan and blamed himself for not being able to save his parents. But despite all his hardships, he is a very friendly person and always seems to try and look at the positive things in life.

Abilities: The ability to change into any animal he can visualize. He can change into large animals, like a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but doing so tires him out at a rapid rate and he might not be able to shift for several days afterwards. Quick changes between animals also tire him out at a faster rate.

Family:

Steve Dayton (Mento): Steve Dayton was the world’s fifth richest man. He was a scientist, business whiz and psychology professor. He had it all. If he wanted something, there was more than enough money to buy it. But there was one thing he wanted that money couldn’t buy. The hand of Rita Farr, the Doom Patrols Elasti-girl, in marriage.

He was persistent in his pursuit, always failing at his goal. In order to get Rita’s attention, he played another strategy. Using his brilliance and money, he found a way to increase the brains psychokinetic powers by use of a special helmet. He donned a costume and set out as “Mento” into the world of super heroics. His first real mission as against an alien who was using earth as a testing ground for his weapons before he returned home to conquer his home planet. Dayton tried to infiltrate the alien’s operation alone, before the Doom Patrol could arrive. It ended in failure. He was captured, brainwashed and forced to fight the Doom Patrol. Once he was free of the mind control, he teamed with the Doom Patrol to battle the alien Garguax and they won. The Doom Patrol destroyed his robot guardians and wrecked his base. By the end, Garguax had appeared to perish with his creations.

While he was never a full member of the Doom Patrol, Dayton was given honorary status in the team and fought alongside them. In the end, his plan worked. He and Rita Farr were married. Together, after a trying legal battle they had almost lost, Steve and Rita adopted Gar Logan, Best Boy.

Mento continued to help the Doom Patrol, whom his wife was still a member despite his antagonism and protests. Soon General Zahl and Madam Rouge killed his wife and the Doom Patrol, whom had voted to let their island be blown up instead of a small fishing villiage. Dayton survived and swore vengeance, spending much time and money trying to track down his wife’s killers. In the end, it was he who was captured by Zahl and Rouge.

It was several months before help arrived. Gar and Robotman, whom had survived the explosion, teamed up with Gars new team, the Teen Titans, to take down Zahl and Rouge. In the end, Mento was rescued, but both Zahl and Rouge perished during the battle. After this Dayton returned to New York city and his company, which had begun to develop Promethium.

In time, Dayton learned he had terminal cancer. In his desperation, he attempted to use the Mento helmet as a means to cure himself, not knowing that it was slowly damaging his brain. Dayton developed an alcohol problem, using it to cope with what was happening in his life. Things got no better.

As Mento, Dayton briefly fought alongside the new Doom Patrol during the Crisis On Infinite Earths, but as time went on he became far more unstable, and after the crisis resolved he joined a group of cultists brought together by John Constantine to fight a group called The Brujera, whom wanted to take control of the chaos generated by the Crisis to gain control of heaven and earth. The Brujera were defeated, but by the end Dayton had been driven completely insane.

Dayton began to imagine himself as the chief of a new Doom Patrol, confining himself to a wheelchair much as Niles Caulder was before. He created his own Doom Patrol, naming them The Hybrid, using promethium and his mental powers, after which he sent them out on a mission to destroy Gar and the Teen Titans. Many battles ensued, with then Blue Beetle Ted Kord helping out in one instance while on a mission of his own, but in the end, Raven cured Dayton of his cancer and his Dementia. Dayton resumed his antagonistic father-son relationship with Gar, but forbade him from super heroics until his grades improved.

Gar was soon captured by the Wildebeests during the Titans Hunt, along with several other Titans for unknown reasons. Steve Dayton teamed up with Raven’s mother Arella and the remaining Titans to track the captured down. The Titans were rescued and the battle won, but not without its price. Arella, Danny Chase and Jericho all perished in the conflict.

With their Tower destroyed by the Wildebeest society, The Titans moved their operations to Dayton estates. At this point in time Pantha began to suspect Dayton was involved in her creation and snooped around for clues to link his involvement. When confronted, Dayton claimed innocence, but afterwards he continued to act suspiciously. However, Pantha left the Titans and formed a make shift family with Red Star and Baby Wildebeest before she could find her answers.

A man who went by “The Crimelord” then appeared, taking up residence in the criminal nation of Zandia and targeting both Deathstroke and the Titans. He spoke only to his highly intelligent computer system Zarina. He also amassed weapons of mass destruction and employed terrorists in a quest to conquer the world. His identity was closely guarded, but was eventually exposed to be Steve Dayton.

It was revealed that Dayton had injected the Mento chip into his hypothalamus, which gave him a new sense of awareness, but also drove him mad with power. He framed Deathstroke in the murder of a US senator as a part of his plan to conquer the world, but Slade, teamed with Sarge Steel, The Titans and Checkmate, managed to clear his name and pin the blame on the Crimelord, who wanted to replace the world leaders with clones.

Once everything began to backfire, Dayton put his back up plan into place. By connecting himself to Zarina, he planned to merge his consciousness with the worldwide web, granting him immortality and all of the world’s computer systems. Unfortunately for Dayton, his computer system crashed before he could gain entry and he was left floating somewhere in the void of cyberspace.

However, at some point Steve Dayton returned once more, joining the Doom Patrol along with his wife Rita and Beast Boy. He is acting off, as is the whole Doom Patrol, but asks Gar to apologize to the Titans about the time as Crimelord. It is revealed that his time as Crimelord was the result of a glitch in the Mento helmet which caused him to lose his sanity once more. The events behind his return and re-emergence from the void of cyberspace has yet to be revealed.

Rita Farr (Elasti Girl): Once upon a time the woman named Rita Farr, code named Elasti Girl, was nothing more than a normal actress. That all changed during the filming of a movie in Africa. Rita was insistent on doing her own swimming stunts in a nearby cave and was accidentally swept over a waterfall. She was thrown into unchartered territories littered with craters that exhumed a mysterious vapor into the air. She drug herself away the best she could, but it wasn’t long before the vapors overcame her. She slipped into a coma and did not wake up, even after she was found by the rescue party. She finally awakened several days later and to her horror, she found that the gases affected her badly. The different parts of her body would either grow to immense proportions or shrink to miniscule sizes, all of it beyond her control.

Terrified of what was happening to her, Rita fled and went into hiding. She was afraid of what people would think of her new state after she had been treated like she was fragile most of her life. Over the course of several months, she mastered her new abilities and found herself subsequently contacted by Niles “Chief” Caulder. He explained that he believed she could use her powers for the greater good, making her a member of his superhero team, The Doom Patrol.

Rita was attracted to fellow teammate Negative Man at first, but in the end it was Steve Dayton who stole her heart. Dayton and Rita eventually married, but she continued her association with the Doom Patrol, much to his chagrin. The two of them soon adopted Gar as their own after a trying legal battle to take custody from Gar’s original guardian, Nicholas Galtry.

The Chief had later discovered that the gases that had given Rita her powers had also reduced her lifespan to an alarming degree. He began to look for a way to reverse the process and return her to normal, but  he never could. Rita Farr died in an explosion with most of the Doom Patrol, whom had chosen to sacrifice themselves to save a small fishing villiage.

Years later, Superboy Prime changed the universe. By pounding on the vibrational barriers that once separated the Multi-Verse, it sent shockwaves that changed reality. This seemed to erase the history of the original Doom Patrol. In this new reality, the Chief gathered Rita Farr and several other members to join the Doom Patrol in present day.

Things began to fall back into place when Gar came across his foster mother. Superboy Prime was trapped in the Phantom Zone by an arrow from current Speedy Mia Dearden, but it didn’t last long. He broke free from the Phantom Zone, which sent ripples forth that made the Doom Patrol remember their true origins. Time began to realign, and all the past history of the Doom Patrol combined to become a whole.

Rita somehow survived the time realignment and is now currently a member of the Doom Patrol along with her foster son Garfield Logan.

Matt Logan: Matthew Kevin Logan was born in Detroit Michigan. When he managed to get his high school diploma he immediately headed to Los Angeles to seek his fortune. So far he has only been able to gain employment at a hot dog stand.

Matt was introduced to his First cousin on his fathers side when Gar left the Titans to find his own way in the world. When Gar was falsely accused of murder, Matt wasn’t much help. After this he enrolled in UCLA’s Cinema School in hopes of eventually becoming a director.

With Gar relocated on the West Coast, Matt took it upon himself to hold a membership drive for a new Titans West. It quickly dissolved into a keg party. When the party was crashed by Duella Dent, whom was angry she hadn’t been considered for membership, few actually remained to help fight her and her henchmen. Once the battle was over, Gar, who was originally against the idea, finally agreed to reform Titans West, which had been renamed by Matt to “Titans LA”. Unfortunately, no one had any real loyalty to the team, and it soon dissolved before it ever truly began.

Nemeses:

Laura De Mille (Madam Rogue): Once upon a time the lady who would come to be known as Madam Rouge was a stage actress. She was widely for her ability to assume pretty much any persona imaginable with her uncanny skill with makeup. But those days ended when she was in an auto accident, receiving a blow to the head that gave her a split personality. Her acting days were over.

The Brain, leader of the Brotherhood of Evil, offered her the opportunity to have surgery to cure her split personality. She accepted and the operation was a success of sorts. While it was true she only had one personality, it was an evil one. Her abilities to disguise herself got her a high position in the brotherhood, and it wasn’t long before The Brain gave her the powers to stretch her body and morph into other people and creatures.

After awhile, her personality disorder began to surface again. Her good side returned, and she found herself sabotaging plans of the Brotherhoods to kill the Doom Patrol on several occasions. In time, she began to realize that she had started falling in love with Niles “Chief” Caulder.

Eventually Chief discovered a way to reverse the process Brain had implemented on Laura, and her good side won out after a battle between her two personalities. Afterwards she decided to stay with the Doom Patrol and Chief, despite Brains repeated attempts to lure her back.

Eventually, and evil guru named Yaramishi Rama Yogi undid Cheifs rehabilative efforts. Laura then became bitter at Chief, whom she once more believed was subverting her true nature, and the Brotherhood of Evil, whom had repeatedly attempted to kill her after her defection. She went in to hiding, plotting the destruction of both groups.

To accomplish her new mission, she allied herself with Captain Zahl. She tracked down the Brotherhood and it appeared she had destroyed them. Then she forced the Doom Patrol to retreat to their island base, which she then destroyed, killing the Doom Patrol in the process.

After the death of the Doom Patrol, she continued working with Zahl for several years until Gar, Robotman and the New Teen Titans tracked them down. In the end, she paid for her crimes with her life. In Gars anger, he accidentally knocked her into a console, shocking her to near death. In the end though, the shock brought back her good side. As she died, the last words on her lips happened to be the name of Nile’s “Chief” Caulder, whom she had fallen in love with when her good side was dominant.

Gemini: Gemini first surfaced in Los Angeles. Her mission was to frame Garfield Logan of murder and discredit him, and for a time, she succeeded. She revealed herself to be the daughter of Laura De Mille, otherwise known as Madam Rouge. She informed Beast Boy that Madam Rouge had a daughter during a time when she was reformed, and that daughter was her. Gemini blamed Beast Boy for the death of her mother, and as such sought revenge against him

It quickly became obvious that she had inherited her mothers shape shifting abilities, which was how she had managed to frame Gar. She was finally defeated after quite the shape shifting battle, and Gar managed to clear his name.

Since that time, she has joined The Brain and became a member of the Brotherhood of Evil.

Dr. Samuel Register (The Zookeeper): Doctor Register was in the same room as Gar’s parents when Gar was infected with Sukutia, a rare tropical disease that was believed to be fatal only to humans. Gar’s parents tested an experiment on their son to save his life, isolating the common bond between humans and animlas. Gars skin turned green, and years later he found he could transform into any animal.

Register wished to find the missing link between nhumans and animals, becoming obsessed with the experiment that gave Gar his powers. His methods were higly unorthadox and he was jettisoned from one job after another due to the extreme lengths he would go to. He was given the nickname “The Zookeeper” while working in Tampa under an animal research division of the government. Finally, he came to work under A San Francisco branch of STAR lab’s in their abnormal and extraterrestrial disease program.

When the children of San Francisco became infected with Sukutia they became green skinned and able to shift into animal forms like Gar. Unfortunatly they had nowhere near his control. Gar was deemed the carrier of the virus and the parents of San Fransisco wanted his head on a stick.

Dr. Register was brought in as an advisor, and it was discovered that Gar wasn’t the virus carrier at all. Dr. Register was. He altered a sample of Sukutia and was unwillingly affected by it. His skin turned purple and scales adorned his skin. He also revealed that he could change into any animal, just like Gar. Register attempted to dissect Gar to find a cure, but Gar’s teammates rescued him at the last minute. Beast Boy fought The Zookeeper all through San Fransisco, finally defeating him out in the bay. Using Registers blood, they were able to turn all the children affected back to normal. Dr. Register himself was found to be immune to any cure and was taken to Alcatraz prison.

The Zookeeper was most recently seen in the “Villains United” Infinite Crisis Special, escaping from Alcatraz with all the others as a worldwide jailbreak took place. The implications of this have yet to be revealed.
